My Role: Lead Designer
TL;DR: Lead design efforts for a new app discovery passion project.
Recently I helped develop an app idea in the personal training market. FitKiq aims to connect fitness seekers with qualified personal trainers whenever and wherever they choose to workout. The goal of the app is to provide a quick and easy experience for users to find and hire a personal trainer that meets them at a location of their choosing.
With many apps taking aim at various verticals in the “gig” economy. I began by researching a host of “Uber for X” startup experiences as well as Uber’s itself. From this research, it became clear that a key part of a successful marketplace app was truly understanding the pain points of the existing market and identifying how to improve upon it with an app based solution.
I conducted multiple surveys focusing on how people currently viewed the personal training market. Was there a pain point to solve?
Through the surveys and interviews of gym-goers, I identified a two key pain points with the current models:
- When hiring a personal trainer through a gym, customers felt they were getting ripped off by signing contracts for sessions they weren’t sure they were going to use.
- When hiring freelance personal trainers there wasn’t a reliable way to vet them or a clear repository of qualified trainers in their area.
Ideation & Prototypes
With these pain-points in mind I began constructing a solution that would allow users to schedule a session whenever they wanted with a qualified personal trainer.
After landing on flows for the main functions of the app it was important to understand how the app flowed together into a cohesive product.
Visual & Interaction Design
With the goal of launching an early MVP to test the market we moved to visual design and code implementation. The app needed to be easy to use and rewarding. Microinteractions would crucial to making the app feel responsive and engaging.
Development is still underway, but some of the key visual design has already begun to take shape.
